Air-Share is a cloud-free meta-sharing app that allows you to seamlessly share content between devices without the need for screen casting. It should be noted, however, that it does not work over mobile data networks.
The app simplifies the sharing process by enabling you to share directly to a second device, such as your Android TV, from your favorite apps. To use Air-Share:
- Install Air-Share on both devices.
- Pair the devices.
- Share content from your favorite app to the second device using Air-Share.
It is important to clarify that the term "cloud-free" refers to the fact that Air-Share does not rely on mobile data networks. Some VPN apps may cause pairing issues, and disabling the VPN could potentially resolve these issues.
Air-Share, along with its companion app Air-Launch, extends the share and launch features of all Android apps, enabling seamless sharing and launching of intents between devices.
While Air-Share is more than just a file transfer app, it is not a cloud service either. It operates through a small web server running within the app itself, ensuring that shared data never leaves your home network. The app supports sharing almost anything from any app with a share button, including large data streams. It can utilize your WiFi, Ethernet, or Bluetooth network, but it is not recommended for use on mobile data networks. Additionally, it supports Google Cast and can share items that Chromecast cannot handle. It also enables queuing of media links on Android TV as recommendations or notifications for later viewing. Moreover, you can also share content from your PC/Mac/iPad to Android devices using any browser.
Air-Share is particularly useful for sharing within families and can be used with devices like Amazon Kindle/Fire, Android HDMI sticks, and older Google TVs.
It's worth mentioning that Air-Share also includes Air-Launch, a feature designed to launch apps remotely and side-load APKs onto devices like Android TV using your phone or tablet. Although Air-Launch is part of the Air-Share app, it appears as a separate app icon for convenience.
The Air-Launch app allows you to:
- Launch apps on a remote device by selecting both the device and the desired app.
- Side-load APKs by long-pressing an app name in Air-Launch to download the APK from the remote device.
For non-Android devices, you can generate unique browser URLs that can be shared with an HTML-5 compatible browser on your Android device. More details and a demo can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vV6KzehnrHs.
All shared files stay on your local network, and transferred files are saved in your Downloads directory.
Air-Share supports various types of sharing, including:
- Sharing apps (APK files)
- Sharing videos from YouTube, Vimeo, and other sources
- Sharing links from your Facebook, Google+, or RSS feeds
- Transfering photos and videos from your gallery apps
- Sharing web links, magnet URLs, etc.
- Sharing cut & paste buffers between devices (long-press places text into remote device paste buffer)
- Sharing files and office documents from your favorite file explorer apps (tested with Astro and ES Explorer)
- Instantly transferring and playing music and movie files (mp3, mp4, etc.) or queuing them as notifications for later enjoyment
- Sharing location, GPS coordinates, KML files, and Google Tracks
- Sharing contacts, people, and vCards
- Sharing files and web links from any device with an HTML-5 browser on your network
If you want to side-load apps from your phone to your Android TV, you can use Air-Share in combination with the "App Backup & Restore" app. Install Air-Share on both devices, pair them, and then use "App Backup & Restore" to select the app you wish to share. Choose "Share with other Apps" and then select Air-Share as the destination. On the Air-Share screen, choose your Android TV as the destination. Please note that you may need to adjust your settings to allow loading of apps from outside the Play Store. As the Nexus Player does not ship with a web browser, you may want to side-load one in addition to apps like QuickPic for viewing JPEG files. Keep in mind that when side-loading apps from your phone, compatibility issues may arise as the Nexus Player is an x86 device while your phone is likely ARM-based.
App developers can leverage Air-Share within their own apps by using simple Android Intents to share content between paired devices. Sample code can be found at https://github.com/BlackSpruce/Air-ShareAPIDemo.
You can also use cURL to script view and send intents from other operating systems. For examples, refer to the Help/FAQ section within the app itself.
